31,478 U.S. Scientists Say Cap-and-Trade Bill Unnecessary
Boulder, CO - Recent House passage of the Waxman-Markey bill reignited a storm of criticism of both the bill and its premise, that industrial activity is or could be a significant cause of global warming leading to catastrophic climate effects. If the Senate accepts the 1,200 page
proposal, the cost in lost economic output is estimated at $161 billion by 2020. This amounts to $1,870 for a family of four, increasing to $6,800 by 2035, according to the Heritage Foundation. Waxman-Markey will lead to higher fuel and electricity costs, at a time when American households are reeling under financial stress and our economy is still at risk of plunging into a full-scale depression. As with the income tax, this bill enhances the prospects for political corruption by creating opportunities to provide carbon exemptions for specific industrial polluters.
President Obama has stated that "there is no longer a debate about whether carbon pollution is placing our planet in jeopardy." This is absolutely false. While 1,500 world scientists signed a petition in 1997 in support of the likelihood that human agency is responsible for global warming, and called it "one of the most serious threats to the planet and to future
generations," more recently, in 2007, 31,478 credentialed scientists, including 9,029 with Ph.D.s, have registered disagreement with this.
Their petition calls for a rejection of the Kyoto agreement and all similar cap-and-trade proposals. It also states: "There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's
climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth."
"If truth sets us free, then a corollary is that falsehoods enslave us," stated National Chairman Jonathan Hill. "Let's not rush to drink the climate-change Kool Aid, because any system for severely rationing energy would have drastic consequences for all of us."
Press Secretary Mike Lynch stated, "We don't need cues from U.N sponsored organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The UN consistently undermines American values; its funding should be stopped, and its headquarters relocated."
