The Man Behind the Sheriff's Badge

The sheriff is the only law enforcement official with the authority to summon the power of the county. The sheriff has the right, granted by Posse Comitatus, to assemble a militia or posse, and the power to deputize citizens and require them to assist in the keeping of the peace and the enforcement of laws. "The sheriff represents the power of the people; he does not represent the power of the state." When it comes to keeping the peace no one's authority exceeds that of the sheriff.....
